| | 1855: William Robinson Boothby, returning officer for
West Torrens

The
last elections for the Legislative Council before 'responsible government' were
held in late 1855. Here, in August, the Government Gazette announces the
appointment of returning officers for all electoral districts. Number 7, West
Torrens, has the then Deputy Sheriff of the colony. According to Boothby, he
also did electoral work back in England.
Number 2, former actor and soon-to-be Adelaide Mayor John
Lazar, also seems an interesting fellow. See his entry in Australian
Dictionary of Biography. (His polling place is interestingly named too.)
