NSW:
50 seats

New South Wales swung to the Coalition by 3.4 percent in 2001- over
100,000 votes - but mostly in safe Labor and Coalition electorates, so the seat
effect was
minimal - just
two (three in post-redistribution notional terms.)
See, for a study in contrasts, the safest
seats on both sides: Mitchell
(21.3) and Fowler
(21.5). Both outer suburban, but similarities end there. One has the
highest unemployment in the land, the other the lowest, with incomes to match.
One north shore Sydney, the other south west. You can guess which is which.
Fowler, which
contains Cabramatta, has Australia's highest number of people born in non English speaking
countries; Mitchell, being in Sydney, is also in
the top third (and the top half of the state).
