There were two
by-elections in 2001. The first was in Ryan
(Qld) which Labor won with a 10% swing.
Aston's
swing, several months later, of only three and a half percent to the
opposition was middling by by-election standards and signified the
government's new-found competitiveness. Above swing is from the 1998
election result.
From there they
went on to win the November election.
