The biggest electorate in
Australia - some say the world - occupying about nine tenths of Western
Australia (see
AEC state map), which of course itself accounts for roughly a third of
the country.
Held by Graeme Campbell for the ALP from
1980 to 1995; from '95 to '98 as an Independent/leader of of Australia
First.
Campbell was close to Pauline Hanson, but would
complain of her success - he'd been saying these things for years,
why wasn't he a star? - and was instrumental in the One Nation WA branch
shenanigans that saw the party split.
Interesting stats from Census 2001: ranks ten
out of 150 in number of people in top income tax bracket, but slips down
to 38th in median income. Also comes second in 'persons of indigenous
origin'. (Lingiari is first.)
