Deep deep blue Liberal seat almost stolen by Democrat and former Redgum lead singer John Schumann in 1998.

In one of those only under preferential voting/"whoops, did I really do that?" (says the voter) scenarios, Downer's 45.6% primary vote was almost not enough against Schumann's 22.4, thanks to buckets of Labor preferences. But Alex ended up winning by 51.7 to 48.3%.

Redistribution has increased margin from 12.9 to 14.3% (against Labor).
