Oldest person in parliament, in one of the Coalition's safest seats. In 1987 the ALP tried to unseat Tuckey by directing preferences to the National candidate. It didn't work, not least because the Nat dropped out of the count before Labor. Anticipating this, the ALP had considered running two candidates, so splitting their vote and ensuring distribution of their preferences.

They didn't proceed with that, and with Tuckey getting 49.5 percent of the primary vote (and so needing only half a percent of preferences to get over the line), it was always a lost cause. See preferential voting.
