Victoria was redistributed during the current
term. Total numbers didn't change, but the Labor
held Burke has gone while Gorton has been created and is notionally Labor. McMillan has gone from Labor
to notional Liberal. Numbers went from 20
versus 17 to 19
versus 18.
For some reason, Victoria has been very kind to
the federal ALP since ejecting
Cain-Kirner in 1992, returning two party preferred Labor
majorities ever since - even in 1996. As graph at top left shows, 1990
produced the only Liberal two party preferred majority in two decades.
Whether they'll go for Latham is another matter,
however; electoral gravity might suggest Victoria's relative support for
federal Labor wanes in
2004.
Possibilities? Deakin (1.6)
crossing to Labor; Bendigo
(3.6)
and Ballarat (3.2) going other way.
