Email from Antony Green 29 August 2006 on this post

"Peter,

There is one extra caveat that should be put on using SA Election data.

South Australia is the only jurisdiction where how-to-vote material is displayed on voting screens. Each candidate has the right to have a small how-to-vote displayed on the voting screen.

The affect of this is that even if a party does not distribute how-to-votes, voters will still have access to a how-to-vote. Unlike at Federal elections where we always have the unknown of whether a party did or did not distribute how-to-votes, that factor is less important in South Australia.

I suspect that is one reason why Family First have been able to direct preferences to Labor in South Australia, where at Federal and W.A. elections, the split seems to be no more than 50:50 when preferences are directed to Labor.

Antony"
